Why the media love, and hate, Second Life

By helenonishi

There is a really interesting piece on Kzero today, discussing the media hype and backlash surrounding Second Life during 2007. I particularly like the Gartner Hype Curve, even if I am slightly depressed that No 7 launched on SL just as the media entered their “trough of disillusionment” with SL.

So now the media are due to be entering the “slope of enlightenment”. Lets hope so. I think I can say that’s been my recent experience. I mean, Vogue writing about No 7 on Second Life shows the future thinking I have come to expect from them (Anna-Marie Solowij’s article on waste in the beauty industry in the same edition being another great example of this).

In the meantime, I’m not worrying about what the media think about Second Life, I’m much more interested in the great conversations I’m having in SL with the people who come to see us in the No 7 salon on Avalon. Although the person who came to look for Lancelot last week was obviously disappointed to find us without an Arthurian theme.

And I’m really looking forward to next week’s event and meeting more people. We’ve all been busy talking about it and handing out flyers, and I’ve met lots of people this week who’ve come to check out where we are ahead of the event. Should be a good night.
